My First Online Job Interview Ever

(Every other interview I’ve done was in-person.)

I thought I was going to get quizzed on topics related to the job: embedded programming, computer vision, and front end development. Turns out I was only asked about myself and why I was interested in the company.

The bad part is that the combination of Indeed Interviews and Firefox1 didn’t pick up my webcam despite permissions.23. Therefore, what I did was launch OBS then share the screen. (Wacky, but I don’t want to have to do that again.)

In hindsight, it would’ve been simpler to video call my phone. I could then peel off the black sticker covering the selfie mugshot cam.

Tell me I should have set boundaries and just went there in person?

  1. I install/launch Firefox when I need to use a “mainstream” browser. So this was a clean install.↩︎

@scuti
They're probably still interviewing other candidates. Consider it a loss and if they follow up it's a pleasant surprise

@Zergling_man @matt_the_tall I had an autism bonus multiplier for doing VOIP over WiFi (=> normal sentences come out as stutters if packets drop).
could go for more by "not making eye contact" (looking at the portion of the screen where the interviewer is instead of the webcam).

@Zergling_man @matt_the_tall I got off my usual browser for what I thought was a normie browser (firefox) for that interview.
lynx would've worked even less for that normie use case.

@matt_the_tall the job interview I went to was way easier than I thought it would be but also awkward.
that day I learned Firefox is not a mainstream browser anymore...

Draw it. I'm serious. Literally drawing what's happening helped a ton with getting my head wrapped around it when I first learned about pointers

@bojidar_bg its some company that sells robots.
it could be embedded, front end, or ML (computer vision) or some combination of all 3.

@scuti Sound like a V8 extension built with scons instead of node-gyp! 😋

But, in more seriousness, best of luck with your interview! (:

I'm probably going to misprepare too because the job listing asked for c++, python, and javascript.

"its like the operating system telling the program there's more memory than the actual hardware has."
"uh bro? a meme song from the 1990s?"
"its like treating hardware devices like a normal block of memory."
"a process has its own resources like a stack and heap but a thread is inside a process"
"MAC is like a hardware identifier but the other one you get from dhcp."
"it has like bytes, man."

I'm gonna fuck this up in my own special way.

"Whats the difference between a class and struct?"
"oh like dude a class defines an object and has methods like a constructor, but a struct is like a bundle of data and everything is public. and classes are c++ only."

have job interview tomorrow.
I'm probably going to be asked
"what is a pointer?"
and I'll probably answer in an airheaded way like
"it's like a hexadecimal number that points to somewhere in memory, can be null, or cause segfault if I fuck up"
in a heavier than intended california (=surfer/pothead) accent.
